salud a tu gente

So I stopped by to visit an old (i.e. 70s) Chilean friend today, and when I left I could have sworn he said salud a tu gente (man, the accent is still killing me), and I kind of chuckled at how funny this would sound in English ... is this a common expression? Would I sound completely dorky if I used it? :-)
