Das männlein im walde vs Ein männlein steht im walde

I was watching "Hannibal Rising", and was pleasently surprised. But I was distracted because I kept getting caught up in the references to the Hansel und Gretel opera melody. Hannibal was saying "Das männlein im walde" , but after looking I found the original is "Ein männlein steht im walde". I know it means the same thing, but if this was a folk song wouldnt it have been sung exactally as versed, and not phrased in slang?

Also, does anyone know where I can find the entire melody and translation?
