"th" in 1908 German

I've given myself the project of transcribing (from Fraktur script - it's a challenge) some love letters written by my great-grandfather to my great-grandmother in 1908. They were both native German speakers living in the Houston/Austin area of Texas, of Wendish heritage. My great-grandfather tends to write "th" instead of just "t" in a many cases: "nathürlich," "gemüthlich," "Heimath," etc.

I've never read anything older than a few decades in German, so I don't know if this is common in turn-of-the-century writing, or if it's a regional peculiarity, or what. Someone enlighten me? Thanks!
