collar hand

Hi everybody! There's a sentence I cannot understand. The scene of action is England of 1940s--1950s. The author was a doctor and wrote:

There was a woman of 55 who had beeen a collar hand in a large outfitter's store for years.

Could anybody please explain the meaning of boldfaced expressions?

Many thanks in advance.
