atentado = attempt?

I'm working on my graduate thesis about how terrorist attacks are represented in the media. I'm going to be comparing the Spanish and US media, but I have a little teeny translation/acceptability question.

In Spanish, it is common to refer to terrorist attacks as atentados. This corresponds more or less to the English "attempt," but it feels kind of awkward to me to say "the terrorist attempts of 9/11 and 11-M."

My instinct tells me that we only say "attempt" when the attack was not successfully carried out, which those of 9/11 and 11-M certainly were. What do you guys think? Is "attempt" an acceptable synonym for "attack"?

Thanks for your input!
