why do some words endure and others don't

Is there any kind of research or explanation why some slang/nonstandard words go on to become part of our vocabulary while others are trendy for a while and then drop out of use almost completely?

I'm going to have a look at Sornig's Lexical innovation and see what it has to say. I know there's been a lot of interest in applying insights concerning the spread of innovations from other areas of social science to sociolinguistics, but I'm not familiar with any studies specifically addressing your question.

Maybe it's not exactly what you want, but it could give some insight into the subject.
