Italian

Hi, guys! First time poster here :D My name is Hope, and I have a question.

I'd like to self-teach myself Italian. I already have a pretty good basis for learning - my mother tongue, Maltese, borrows heavily from Italian and has similar verb conjugation and pronunciation. Now, what I want to ask is: are there any helpful resources (websites, books, films) that you'd recommend? And what are some tips for learning Italian?

Personally, I've liked using PREGO! AN INVITATION TO ITALIAN (7th Edition), as well as THE ULTIMATE ITALIAN REVIEW AND PRACTICE, which was published just a few months ago. The latter is very technical (though helpfully specific) compared to PREGO!, which I've found to be more visual and engaging for a beginner. I've also watched local dubbed and subtitled documentaries, and I listen to Italian language music whenever I can (Jovanotti, Bocelli, Gianluca Grigiani, Giorgia...).

Like any language, I recommend that you practice and observe it as often and as consistently as possible. Nearly all of the Italian speakers I know live more than a couple hours' drive away, but I Skype with/email them regularly, and I make flashcards for repetition and listen to Italian podcasts. I've also been using the iOS apps MIND SNACKS ITALIAN and CONJUGATION NATION: ITALIAN, which have been fun ways to spend at least a few minutes a day practicing. The one group class I took with a native Italian speaker was also very helpful.

Buona fortuna! :)
