Punctuation issue

I used to know this, but I've forgotten it. I know that when using a word in an ironic way you use quotes around it.

example: I went to Anna's house and saw her "cute" dog.

But what is the correct way to punctuate a word when it's used in this manner?

example: She said "fool" when she should have said "sir."

Are the quotes correct or should I use italics?
